DAVIDSON, N.C. - This weekend, Davidson will play host to the semifinal and final rounds of the 2008 Southern Conference Men's Soccer Tournament at Alumni Stadium. The tournament will open on Friday, Nov. 14 with a pair of semifinal matches, starting at 4:30 p.m. when Elon and the College of Charleston will face off, followed at 7 p.m. by UNC Greensboro against Georgia Southern. Then on Sunday, Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. the winners of these two matches will square off in the tournament finals, with a conference championship and a berth to the NCAA Tournament on the line.
This will be the second time that Davidson has hosted the SoCon Tournament final rounds. In 1995, the Wildcats took home the tournament title, defeating Furman 1-0 in the championship game. Last season, the final rounds took place in Greensboro, N.C. with the No. 1 seed Furman Paladins defeating the No. 3 seed UNCG?Spartans by a 1-0 overtime score to win the 2007 SoCon Tournament title.
Friday's first semifinal contest will pit the No. 1 seeded Elon Phoenix against College of Charleston, the tournament's No. 5 seed. Elon, who took home the SoCon regular season championship, defeated No. 8 Wofford by a 3-0 score to advance to this weekend's play. The Phoenix went undefeated in conference play this season, putting up a 7-0 mark in the regular season, and a 9-8-1 overall record to win their first-ever SoCon regular season championship. College of Charleston finished the year with an even 9-9-0 overall record, and went 3-4-0 in SoCon Play. The Cougars then upset No. 4 seed Appalachian State 3-2 in overtime to advance.
Following the first match on Friday night, with a scheduled 7 p.m. kick-off time, will be No. 3 seed Georgia Southern taking on the tournament's lowest remaining seed, No. 7 UNC?Greensboro. GSU, picked up the third seed by finishing the regular season with a 4-3-0 conference record, and posting a 7-8-0 overall mark. The Eagles defeated Davidson 2-1 in the tournament quarterfinals, their second-consecutive 2-1 win over the Wildcats this season. UNCG pulled the biggest upset of the quarterfinal round, going on the road and taking down No. 2 seed Furman by a 2-1 count. The Spartans, who went 2-5-0 in the SoCon during the regular season and 6-11-1 overall, will be looking to become the lowest-seeded team to win the tournament title since the conference began seeding the teams in 1997.
Then on Sunday at 1 p.m., the winner of the Elon/College of Charleston match will go up against the winner of the UNC?Greensboro/Georgia Southern contest for the 2008 SoCon Tournament Championship.
Tickets for all of the matches will be $5 for adults and $3 for youth and students with a valid student ID. Also, youth groups of ten or more can purchase tickets for $2 apiece.
