
Men’s Soccer Plays Host to Georgia Southern Saturday In Regular-Season Finale

DAVIDSON, N.C. - As the 2008 season comes to a close, the Davidson men's soccer team will return home one final time in the regular season when they take on Georgia Southern this Saturday, Nov. 1, at 1 p.m. at Alumni Stadium. This is a critical Southern Conference game for the Wildcats, as they are fighting for position in the SoCon Tournament, which kicks off next weekend.
Saturday's match will also be the final home contest for Davidson's three seniors - Whitey Bolan, Juan Duque, and Cameron Griffin. Prior to the start of the match, these three will celebrate their Senior Day, and be honored for their countless contributions to the Davidson program during their time in the red and black.
Scouting the Wildcats: Davidson comes into the match after picking up their first road win of the season, a 1-0 victory over Wofford on Wednesday night. With the win, they improve to 4-12-1 overall and 2-4 in the SoCon. Sophomore Yannick Pilgrim connected on only goal against Wofford, his third goal of the year, and his team-leading second game-winner. Classmate Alex Caskey sits atop the team leaderboard with nine points, and is tied with Pilgrim and Machel Turner for the most on the squad with three goals. Nine different Wildcats have recorded a goal on the year, with Charlie Reiter as the other member of the multi-score group with his two scoring strikes. Junior goalkeeper Robby Goldsberry currently sits in second place in the SoCon with 60 saves in 990 minutes between the pipes, and picked up his second shut out against Wofford.
Scouting the Eagles: Georgia Southern has a record of 5-8-0, and 2-3-0 in the SoCon, after dropping their last non-conference match of the year to Mercer, 1-0, on Oct. 28. They have picked up conference wins against Appalachian State and Wofford, and sport a 3-3 mark away from home for the year. They are led offensively by Daniel Smith, who has scored five goals in 13 matches, while adding one assist for a team-high 11 points overall. B.J. Reine has accounted for four goals, and Jon Cox has the team lead with three assists. The Eagles have played three goalkeepers this season, with Joey Ralph leading the way with 540 minutes of action, having made 25 saves and allowed seven goals for a goals-against-average of 1.17. As a team, GSU?has given up 18 goals while scoring 14 of their own, and have out-shot their opponents by a 164-153 margin.
The Series: Saturday will the 25th meeting all-time between these two schools, with Davidson holding a 17-6-1 advantage in the series. Last season, the 'Cats rallied from a two-goal deficit and took home a 3-2 road victory over Georgia Southern. Sophomore Robert O'Donnell's first collegiate goal turned out to be the game-winner as Davidson stopped a seven-game losing streak with the victory. Other than a pair of losses in the 2006 season, the Wildcats have won five-straight over the Eagles.
