The 2007-08 academic year marks the 25th anniversary of women's championships in the Southern Conference, and to celebrate the occasion, the Southern Conference is spotlighting individuals who have been named to the league's 25th Anniversary teams.
SoCon Spotlight
Mara Mordini (1997-2000) of Davidson capped her collegiate career by becoming the only volleyball player in Southern Conference history to be named both Player of the Year and Tournament Most Valuable Player in back-to-back seasons (1999, 2000). The 5-9 outside hitter was a force, especially during her senior season when she established new school single-season records in kills (559) and digs (645) while also ranking third nationally in digs per game with 4.96.
Mordini was a three-time selection to the SoCon all-conference first team, and the Lake Bluff, Ill. native earned six player of the week citations, which ranks as the second-highest number in league history.
The outside hitter's 1,872 career digs are still a school record and are almost 300 more than the second leading player in Davidson history.
In addition to her individual accomplishments, Mordini guided Davidson to the SoCon regular season and tournament crowns during the 1999 and 2000 seasons, marking the Wildcats' first-ever league volleyball titles. Davidson stormed to an unbeaten 20-0 conference mark in 1999 and defending its crown with a 16-4 record in 2000. The Wildcats participated in the NCAA Volleyball Tournament in '99 and 2000, battling traditional powers Nebraska and Hawaii.
Mordini is currently believed to be serving with the Peace Corps in Costa Rica.
The following Davidson student-athletes join Mordini on the Southern Conference's 25th Anniversary Teams:
Jennifer O'Brien (1996-2000), Basketball – three-time all-SoCon; DC's all-time leading scorer (1,510 points)
Kelly Fillnow (2002-05), Tennis – three-time first-team all-SoCon selection in singles, once in doubles
Brenna Burns (2004-07), Cross Country – Holds the school record in the 5K; four-time runner of the week
Jamilah Sawyer (1995-98), Outdoor Track & Field – Holds numerous school records; three-time all-SoCon in 100m
Brenna Burns (2004-present), Indoor Track & Field – 2007 SoCon Indoor Track Performer of the Year
Kara Koehrn (2002-05), Soccer – 2005 Player of the Year; '05 NSCAA Scholar-Athlete all-American
