DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson wraps up a three-game homestand with a Southern Conference contest against Appalachian State in women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Belk Arena.
The Opening Tip
Davidson (8-7, 2-2 SoCon) is hunting for at least one win after dropping its first two contests to Western Carolina and Chattanooga of the homestand by playing the Mountaineers (2-12, 0-4 SoCon) on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 2 p.m. The 'Cats sit at 4-2 in home contests, but are 1-2 in league home games.
The All-Time Series/Last Meeting
The series is 18-14 in favor of Appalachian State, but Davidson has won five of the last seven games. The 'Cats took both contests last year in the two-game series, 75-62 and 68-64.
Scouting the Wildcats
Davidson, who has been in a rut lately by dropping four of its past six games, suffered a 67-47 setback to Chattanooga in its latest game. The loss marked the 18th straight time it has fallen to the Mocs.
Senior Honna Housley (Riceville, Tenn.) was the lone Wildcat to score in double figures, matching her personal-best with 17 points, and hit three of her team's four shots from behind the arc. In her six home games this year, Housley leads Davidson with a 11 points per game average. She is second on the team with nine three-pointers at Belk Arena and is averaging over four boards a contest at home.
Right behind Housley is junior Mercedes Robinson (Baltimore, Md.), who is averaging close to a double-double at home with averages of 10.8 points and eight rebounds per game. Overall, Robinson is in the SoCon top-10 in three offensive categories (points, rebounds and field goal percentage).
Not helping matters against Chattanooga was Davidson's 27.3 percent shooting percentage, including a 4-of-19 performance from three-land. On the season, the Wildcats are hitting 39 percent of their shots, down from last year's 44 percent shooting.
Helping to offset its field goal percentage has been the 'Cats free throw shooting. They rank second in the Southern Conference at 71.4 percent.
Davidson seeks its third straight win, and sixth in the past seven games, against Appalachian State. Red-shirt senior Katie Hamilton (Lilburn, Ga.) led the Wildcats to a two-game sweep last year by combining for 30 points and 17 rebounds in the two games.
The Wildcats are 3-3 under the direction of Annette Watts when playing ASU at home.
Scouting the Mountaineers
Appalachian State is seeking to stop a five-game losing streak after dropping an 87-63 decision to Western Carolina on Monday. ASU has also lost to Chattanooga, DePaul, San Diego and La Salle during the skid as it is just 2-12 on the season, 0-4 in league play.
Monday saw the Mountaineers hang tough against the Catamounts, tying things up at 29-all on a free throw in the first half, before going into halftime down 38-31. Western then took over, pushing its lead out to 69-53 in the middle stages of the second half and cruised to the win.
Whitney Randolph registered her second career double-double with 13 points and a career-best 10 rebounds. She ranks fifth on team with a 7.7 points per game average, but is first in rebounds at 5.9 per game which places her seventh in the SoCon.
Offensively, Appalachian State is led by Whitney Tossie and GiGi Thomas. Both have combined to lead the team in scoring nine times and are one-two in points per game at 11.5 and 10.6, respectively. In her last meeting against the Wildcats, Thomas went off for 16 points and five rebounds. Tossie is also a threat on defense, hauling in nearly four rebounds a game and pocketing a SoCon-best 45 steals.
Last season, ASU was 13-18 overall and 6-12 in league play. The Mountaineers advanced to the quarterfinals of the SoCon tournament, but fell to Chattanooga, 84-60.
The Mountaineers are a very young team with eight of the 11 players being either freshmen or sophomores this year. They brought back six of their 12 letterwinners from last year, with two of the three starters returning.
ASU has had a rough go of it on the road this year with a 1-6 mark. Its latest loss came at San Diego, 79-60, on Dec. 28.
