GREENSBORO, N.C. -- After Dayton rallied to tie the score with 46 seconds remaining in regulation, Davidson's Machel Turner responded with a golden goal in the 93rd minute to give the Wildcats a 2-1 victory on the final day of the UNC Greensboro adidas Classic Sunday afternoon. The win was the first of the campaign for Davidson as it improves to 1-3-0 overall, while the Flyers' seven game unbeaten streak comes to an end, dropping them to 2-1-1.
“We've played some good soccer and it's nice to get a win,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. “Our guys showed a lot of heart to stay with the game, and as a result we beat a very good Dayton team.”
Turner's (Kingston, Jamaica) fourth career strike came when he received a pass from fellow forward Tom Lavan (Omaha, Neb.), beat his defender one-on-one, and blasted a right-footed shot from 15 yards out into the back of the net. The assist was the third of the young slate for Lavan.
“It went from the worst feeling in the world, to the best feeling in the world,” commented senior co-captain Robby Hoak (Raleigh, N.C.).
Davidson grabbed an early 1-0 advantage in the 12th minute on Aaron West's (Chapel Hill, N.C.) header following a Whitey Bolan (Wilmington, N.C.) shot that caromed off the cross bar.
Just minutes after Dayton's Isaac Kissi picked up his second yellow card forcing the Flyers to play a man down; West was issued a red card as a result of a bicycle kick that unintentionally struck a defender in the face.
Trailing almost the entire contest, Dayton provided an equalizer at the 89:14 mark to send the game into overtime. Alex Torda evened the match with a rip from 15 yards out that found the lower left corner of the goal.
Dayton held a slim 12-11 edge in shots.
Robby Goldsberry (Tampa, Fla.) finished with a game-high six saves for the Wildcats, while Dayton's Zac Gibbens stop a pair of attempts on frame.
“I want to applaud Robby Goldsberry for the way he played this afternoon,” said Spear. “He made some very critical saves in net for us.”
Davidson will enjoy a five-day break before traveling to Charlotte for a 7 p.m. match with the 49ers Saturday, Sept. 15. Dayton returns home for a 7 p.m. kickoff against Eastern Illinois Friday.
“We are a very tired team following a pair of weekend tournaments. We need to rest and recover quickly to get ready for a big game next weekend against our cross-county rival.”
