GREENSBORO, N.C. – Scott Hawkins scored a pair of goals to lead Lafayette to a 3-0 blanking of Davidson in the opening round of the UNCG adidas Classic Friday evening at UNCG Soccer Stadium. The setback drops the Wildcats to 0-3-0 on the young campaign, while Lafayette improves to 2-1-0.
“I thought we came out flat and lacked the confidence needed to win an important game,” commented Davidson head coach Matt Spear.
Just minutes into the contest, the Wildcats had a great chance to grab the early advantage, but Lafayette's Chris Philip made a great save on Charlie Reiter's attempt from five yards out.
Lafayette's Anthony Sepe broke the scoreless tie in the 32nd minute of play with his first score of the 2007 season. The game's first goal was set up when B.J. Glen received a long boot from Lafayette's keeper Phillips, got by a Wildcat defender and fed the cutting Sepe at the top of the box.
With just under two minutes remaining in the opening period, the Leopards extended their lead on Hawkins' header that found the back of the net. Both Mike Celentano and Evan Cohen assisted on the senior's 20th career strike.
“Lafayette is a very mature team that was very efficient and capitalized on their chances in the first half.”
Hawkins provided the Leopards an insurance score and his second of the contest with a blast from 20 yards out that bounced off the near post and into the goal. Kenn Stearns recorded the assist on the game's final tally.
Both clubs finished with nine shots each. Lafayette's Philip Nelson turned away all four of the Wildcats' attempts on goal en route to his first career shutout, while Ben Ashton recorded three saves for Davidson.
Despite the loss, Davidson held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
Davidson will conclude its appearance in the 2007 UNC Greensboro adidas Classic with a 12 p.m. match against Dayton Sunday, while the Leopards and UNCG follow with a 2 p.m. kickoff to wrap up the annual event.
"As a club, we need to regroup, regain some purpose, and show a lot more spirit and fight when we step on the field," said Spear.
