DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson men's tennis incoming class of 2011 were ranked 18th overall in the top-25 Mid-Major men's recruiting classes for 2007 according to tennisrecruiting.net. Davidson ranked just behind San Diego State and ahead of Georgia Washington. BYU had the top recruiting class of 2007 according to the rankings.
These mid-major rankings include all colleges in all divisions except for those in the so-called "major conferences".
The Wildcats three incoming freshmen that were ranked in the list were J. Carter Braxton, Walker Lyons and Arie Hefter.
Each player is given a ranking on a scale of one star to five stars, helping to base the teams recruiting class. Hefter and Lyons were both given four out of five stars, while Braxton was ranked on a scale of three out of five stars.
Davidson also helped the Southern Conference place four teams in the rankings, one of only two conferences to do so with the other being the Big West.
The Wildcats' three recruits come from the states of North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Alabama.
Braxton, a local product from Charlotte, N.C., was ranked as high as 264th individually in the TennisRPI in 2007. He was ranked 25th overall coming out of North Carolina.
He was the senior captain on his high school's state championship team. Braxton finished runner-up at state individually in doubles action. In addition, he was a Western Regional doubles champion and singles runner-up. Braxton was the SWAAAA conference doubles champ. During his prep senior year, he garnered All-State, All-Western Region, all-conference and All-Observer honors. Was given the Providence High Athlete of the Week.
Hefter comes to Davidson from Birmingham, Ala. and according to the 2007 rankings, was ranked 169th nationally and 1st in Alabama for the past two years. He was ranked as high as 81st in the USA and 26th in the Southern USTA in the past year. The incoming freshman won the Alabama high school championship, while leading his team to the school's first-ever boys state championship in its 54-year history.
Hefter recorded an overall mark of 64-4 in his five years on the varsity squad.
Finally, Lyons is a native of Wallingford, Pa. and had the highest ranking among the Wildcat freshman. He was ranked 77th nationally and eighth in the Middle Atlantic recruiting list. Lyons was a two-time central league champion and a two-time Pennsylvania district one champion.
In addition, he qualified for the quarterfinals in singles at the state championships as a freshman and then was a semifinals during his prep career as a junior.
Davidson concluded the 2006 season with an 8-16 overall record in head coach Drew Barrett's first season.
