Davidson M. Soccer Drops SoCon Opener, 2-0, at Elon

ELON, N.C. — Elon netted a goal in each half and held the visiting Wildcats to just four shots en route to a 2-0 Southern Conference victory over Davidson at Rudd Field on Sunday night. Davidson dropped its fourth straight game to fall to 1-7-0 and opened SoCon play at 0-1, while the Phoenix improved to 5-2-2 and 2-0 in the league.
Justin Wyatt's fifth marker of the campaign put Elon out in front at the 21:38 mark. Wyatt's team-leading score came off a Clint Collins pass and proved to be the game-winner.
"Elon was the better team from the start. It was disappointing we had a flat beginning, because it gave Elon the momentum from the outset," said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. "For such a big conference opener, our players needed a better performance."
With just under 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Collins delivered a scoring pass once again. This time Collins took a pass from Brett Paschall and the two played a give-and-go with Paschall netting the second Phoenix goal of the evening. The score was the fourth of the year for Paschall and moves him into a tie for sixth place on Elon's career goals chart with 21.
Elon keeper Clint Irwin turned away both shots that were put on frame by Davidson to earn his third shutout of the season.
Robby Goldsberry corralled six saves for the Wildcats.
The Phoenix outshot Davidson by a 13-4 margin overall and an 8-2 advantage on goal. Elon earned seven corner kicks while the Wildcats were blanked in that category.
"It's two teams with different levels of confidence. Elon continues their six game unbeaten streak, including an impressive midweek tie at Clemson. And we lose our fourth straight. Confidence can be up and down, and we need to fight harder, play sharper, and improve from our mistakes to ignite this season."
Davidson returns home for the first time in six straight contests when it plays host to South Carolina at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3.
