PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The host Cardinal scored a pair of second half goals to defeat Davidson 2-0 in men's soccer action on the final day of the 2007 Nike Stanford Invitational at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. The loss was the third straight for the Wildcats as they fall to 1-6-0 overall, while Stanford concludes its annual event with two triumphs and improves to 3-2-2 on the young campaign.

"We were outplayed by a better team," said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. "Stanford put a lot of pressure on us. They are very athletic, connected across the field, and we were unable to match their intensity and performance level."

After outshooting Davidson 9-1 in the first period, Stanford's Dan Shapiro broke the scoreless tie just 4:04 into the last frame with his team-leading fourth strike of the season and third in the last two matches. Brant Bishop set up Shapiro's 49th minute header that found left corner of frame.

"Robby Goldsberry kept us in the game with some outstanding first half saves. But given the 0-0 halftime opportunity, our guys were unable to get it going in the second half. Stanford's level of play certainly had a lot to do with that. But I expected more from our players. Overall, it was a weak performance."

Stanford's Tom Montgomery netted his first goal of the season and the game's final in the 65th minute off a cross from Thiago Sa Freire.

The Cardinal controlled the shot column with an impressive 19-2 advantage. The Wildcats' Robby Goldsberry stopped a game-high six shots, while Stanford's Andrew Kartunen recorded his 11th career shutout in the effort.

Davidson has a week break before returning to action in its SoCon opener at Elon Sept. 30. The Cardinal will continue their six-game homestand Friday with a 7:30 p.m. contest against College of Charleston.
