DAVIDSON, N.C. — After a tough weekend on the road, the Davidson volleyball team will return to the comforts of Belk Arena on Tuesday night, hosting the Winthrop Eagles in a 7 p.m. contest.
With a 5-7 overall record, Davidson is looking to rebound after an 0-3 showing at the Arizona Invitational, falling to UC Irvine, Cal State Bakersfield and the host Wildcats. Freshman Sarabeth Peele represented the 'Cats on the all-tournament team and posted 31 kills to pace Davidson's offense.
Scouting the Eagles
Led by first-year coach Sally Polhamus, Winthrop is 3-9 overall after trips to the Duke Invitational, Holiday Inn Classic, Coors Classic and its own Wingate Inn Invitational.
The preseason Big South Conference favorite is led by preseason player of the year junior Shannon Sitzmann. Sitzmann leads the team with 178 kills (3.71/g) and 52 blocks, to go along with 10 aces. Freshman Kelly Sellers is second on the team with 150 kills (3.12/g). Junior Pohai Nu'Uhiwa leads the Winthrop defense with 255 digs (5.31/g), while freshman setter Kelsey Hall has tallied 388 assists.
The Eagles were tabbed to win a sixth straight conference championship, receiving seven first-place votes and 90 of a possible 98 points, after going 34-3 last season with a perfect 14-0 Conference record.
Sitzmann, a 2006 First Team All-Big South performer, finished last season ranked second in the league with 1.23 blocks per game and a .350 hitting percentage. She ranked among conference leaders with 3.53 kills per game and notched two 20-kill matches.
Overall Series
The 'Cats hold a commanding 17-8 lead over the Eagles, but lost a narrow 2-3 (29-31, 21- 30, 30-24, 30-26, 15-12) decision last season at the Wake Forest Invitational on Sept. 15.
Liz Williamson had 22 kills for the 'Cats, while senior Katie Pierucci (20) and junior Kittery Neale (17) also posted double figures.
The Eagles had four hitters in double figures, but Sitzmann (13) is the lone returner.
