CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Senior Flaviu Simihaian (Nasaud, Romania), junior Ethan Jaffee (Indianapolis, Ind.) and the sophomore duo of Sam Burns (Banner Elk, N.C.) and Eric Noble (Fayetteville, N.C.) represented the Wildcat men's tennis program over the weekend at the Virginia Fall Invitational in both singles and doubles.
Burns and Noble both advanced to the semifinals in their respective singles brackets. Burns rattled off a 6-4, 6-3 victory in the first round, before then taking a three-setter by the score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 against Magdi El Mihdawi of Columbia. He then was forced to retire in his semifinal match vs. Ben Wirth of William & Mary.
Noble opened up his first round with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Jeff Karsh of Penn. He then earned a straight set 6-2, 6-2 quarterfinal win over a player from Longwood, before dropping a 6-3, 6-1 match in the semifinals.
Both sophomores teamed up as doubles partners and made it the consolation semifinals. After dropping their first round match, the tandem came back to earn a win over a doubles team from Elon, before coming up short against Duke in the semis.
The Wildcats' Simihaian and Jaffee both had nice showings over the weekend as well. Despite dropping his first round singles match, Simihaian was able to advance all the way to the consolation semifinals, before falling, 7-6, 1-6, 10-6 to Niklas Persson of Denver.
Jaffee opened up his first round match with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Chase Helpingstein of Elon, but then lost a straight set, 6-3, 6-0 quarterfinal match to Ivan Salec of Radford, who eventually went on to win the Orange singles bracket.
Simihaian and Jeffee also both participated together in doubles. They opened up their doubles bracket with an 8-4 win over a team from Stetson, before coming up just short in a 9-7 loss to the doubles team from Boise State.
