ROCK HILL, S.C. — The Davidson women's cross country team placed four individuals in the top-10, led by junior Caroline Sanker, who finished first and set a new school-record to lead the 'Cats to a first-place finish in the Gold Division on Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop Asics Invitational.
Sanker's time of 17:12 in the 5K topped all 70 runners and bettered her own finish (3rd) and time (18:28) from last year at the invitational. The 'Cats earned just 24 points as a team, and finished 15 points ahead of second-place South Carolina (39).
"Caroline ran a fantastic race today!" head coach Jen Straub said. "She and Brenna did a great job leading our team, and we got great performances from some of our freshmen! I am very proud and very pleased with our race as a team today."
Finishing just eight seconds behind, senior Brenna Burns, last year's winner at the event, crossed the line second in a career-best time of 17:20. She also broke the previous school record, which she ran at the 2006 Southern Conference Championship (17:39.22).
Freshman Lauren Childs started her career on a strong note, finishing sixth as the 'Cats third runner to finish in the top-10. Rounding out to top-10 for Davidson was senior Annie O'Donnell (Wilmington, N.C.) when she ran a personal-best time of 18:26 to finish fourth out of the 70 Division I runners.
Senior Megal Atias was just outside the top-10 with her time of 19:05 for an 11th place finish overall, while freshman Sarah Cline closed out just behind Atias with a time of 19:11 for 12th overall.
The Wildcat women also won the Winthrop Invitational last season.
