DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's cross country team has been ranked ninth in the Southeast region, as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
"We appreciate the recognition by the Coaches Association," head coach Jen Straub said. "I am excited about the possibilities ahead of us, but we know that it will take a lot of hard work from all of our runners to achieve this ranking at the end of the season!"
The Virginia women are the top-ranked team in the Southeast region, returning three All-Americans from last year's squad. N.C. State, who won the regional title in 2006, was picked second in the region, followed by Duke, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.
The Wildcat women were selected second in the 2007 SoCon preseason cross country poll, after finishing third at last year's SoCon championships and a program-high ninth at the 2007 NCAA Louisville regional. This year's squad will once again be led by senior captain Brenna Burns, who finished third and earned All-SoCon honors last season.
After competing in the Wake Forest relays on Aug. 31, the women will head to Rock Hill, S.C., this weekend to participate in the Asics/Winthrop Invitational on Saturday. They finished first at the event last season as Burns took the title and four others finished in the top five.
