Volleyball Set to Host James Madison, High Point and Connecticut in Mizuno Wildcat Classic

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson Wildcats volleyball team will open its home season this weekend, hosting the James Madison Dukes, High Point Panthers and University of Connecticut Huskies in the 2007 Mizuno Wildcat Classic Friday and Saturday at Belk Arena.
Play gets underway at 5 p.m. on Friday, as High Point (3-1) and Connecticut (2-0) take the court for game one. The Wildcats (2-0) will play in the nightcap at 7:30 p.m. against James Madison (1-1).
Action continues Saturday with four matches. Connecticut and James Madison will play the opener at 10 a.m., followed by the first of two matches of the day for the Wildcats, who take on High Point at 12:30 p.m.
After a brief intermission, High Point battles James Madison at 5 p.m., and Davidson will wrap the tournament with Connecticut at 7:30 p.m.
Live video will be available for the three games featuring Davidson.
Davidson Wildcats
Last Weekend: The Wildcats start 2-0 for the second straight season with wins over UNC Wilmington and Radford at UNC Greensboro last Friday.
Team Info: A member of the Southern Conference, Davidson has been picked to finish fifth in the coaches' preseason poll, after finishing last season with a 10-8 conference mark and 18-16 overall record. Senior team captain Katie Pierucci was named to the All-SoCon preseason team, after posting 442 kills, 95 assists, 37 aces, 361 digs and 64 blocks last season.
Record vs. Opp: first meeting with Connecticut; 7-4 vs. High Point (last meeting, 2006); 0-3 vs. James Madison (last meeting, 1995).
Connecticut Huskies
Last season: The Huskies went 19-11 overall and 8-6 in the Big East. UConn advanced to the Big East Tournament for the first time since 2002, falling to Louisville in four games. (The top eight teams advance.)
Team Info: The Huskies return six starters to its lineup, including All-Big East Second Team selection and team MVP Bridget Denson-Dorman. In her rookie season, Denson-Dorman averaged 12.69 assists per game, third-best in the Big East. With 1,307 assists last season, she racked up the fifth-best total in UConn history. Kate Seabaugh led the team with 306 kills while adding 247 digs and 37 blocks. Seniors Julie Pickard, Sade Chambers and Gina Heiderman are also important contributors.
High Point Panthers
Last season: HPU, under the guidance of fifth-year head coach Chad Esposito, returns 11 letterwinners and five starters from a squad that finished 10-22 last year. The Panthers posted a program-record six Big South victories a season ago.
Team Info: The Panthers were picked to finish fifth by the panel in the annual preseason standings poll. Senior Jamie Kaufman was chosen a Big South Conference preseason first-team All-Big South performer. Kaufman, an outside hitter from Pacific Palisades, Calif., was a first-team All-Big South performer last season after ranking among the league leaders in kills and service aces. She eclipsed 1,000 career kills last season and is on pace to tally her 1000th career dig this season.
James Madison Dukes
Last season: JMU went 19-9 a year ago and tied for second in the CAA at 13-5. Head coach Disa Garner will lead the Dukes into her eighth season at Madison. She is 116-79 in her career with the Dukes after notching win #100 last year. Garner was named the Coach of the Year in both the CAA and the state, as named by the Virginia Sports Information Directors.
Team Info: The Dukes have been picked to finish second in the Colonial Athletic Association by a very narrow margin over defending champion Hofstra. JMU returns six starters from last year¹s group while also welcoming a talented group of five freshmen to the mix. Senior middle blocker Allison Halls was named CAA Preseason Player of the Year, while senior libero Jena Pierson also was named to the team. Pierson was the CAA Defensive Specialist of the Year and first team All-CAA last season.
