DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Southern Conference cross country coaches have picked the Wildcat women's cross country team to finish second in the 2007 SoCon preseason cross country poll.
The Chattanooga women return the core of last year's conference championship team and received eight first-place votes for a total of 97 points. With three first-place votes, the Wildcat women were picked second with a total of 90 points. Appalachian State (81) was third, followed by Elon (75), Furman (61) and College of Charleston (58). Western Carolina (41), The Citadel (35), UNC Greensboro (35), Georgia Southern (20) and Wofford (12) round things out for the women.
"Obviously, I am very pleased that the coaches in the league think highly enough of our program to select us second," women's cross country coach Jen Straub said. "While it is a nice honor, it is a preseason poll, and we know it will take hard work all season long for us to accomplish the goals we have set out as a team."
The Wildcat women finished third at last year's Southern Conference championships and a program-high ninth at the 2007 NCAA Louisville regional. This year's squad will once again be led by senior captain Brenna Burns, who finished third and earned All-SoCon honors last season.
