DAVIDSON, N.C. -- For the second straight year, the Davidson women's basketball team had at least two representatives earn a nod on the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) University Division All-State team as senior Tia Washington (Charlotte, N.C.) and redshirt junior Katie Hamilton (Lilburn, Ga.) were named to the second team as announced today.
For the duo, its marks the second time each that they have been honored with a spot on the all-state team. Washington was named to the second team last year and Hamilton earned first-team all-state honors in 2004-05.
The teams consist of 10 student-athletes from North Carolina NCAA Division I colleges and universities. Nominees were submitted by North Carolina sports information professionals and NCCSIA members voted for the all-state teams.
Washington and Hamilton helped the Wildcats to one of their best seasons ever in the program's 28-year history. Davidson concluded the 2006-07 season with a school-best 23 wins and its first-ever postseason trip with a bid to the Women's NIT.
Hamilton returned from missing all of the 2005-06 season due to a torn ACL suffered in the preseason to lead the second-highest scoring team in the Southern Conference (70.5) with a 10.7 points per game average. Hamilton also showcased her sharp-shooting touch from downtown as she topped the conference in three-point field goal percentage at a 38.4 percent clip. She currently ranks third all-time in program history with 137 three-balls and is sixth with a career percentage of 34.0.
The redshirt junior earned All-SoCon first team honors this season as picked by the coaches and was named to the second team by the media.
Hamilton became the 10th player in program history to score 1,000 points when she accomplished the feat on Jan. 20 vs. Wofford. She currently sits in sixth with 1,134 total points.
Washington, who was one of the best point guards in the SoCon the past three years, was the Wildcats' sparkplug on offense and defense this year. The senior finished her final season in the top-10 in the league in five categories, including third in field goal percentage (49.0) and first in assist/turnover ratio (1.74). Washington was third on the team with a 9.1 points per game average, and paced the Wildcats with a career-best 115 assists and pocketed a team-best 62 steals.
Washington was recognized for her outstanding play in the SoCon this season with a nod on the second team as voted on by the media.
The Wildcat point guard closed out her career ranked in the top-15 in the Davidson record book in five offensive categories, including tied for second in assists and third in field goal percentage.
She recently was honored with the Rebecca E. Stimson Award as Davidson's top female student-athlete for the 2006-07 season.
Washington not only excelled on the court, but also in the classroom. She was a three-time SoCon TIAA-CREF Student-Athlete of the Week and a three-time All-SoCon All-Academic team member. Last season, the senior was honored with the Commissioner's Medal, given by the SoCon for outstanding academic accomplishments. Washington was also named to the 2006 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars third team.
