DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson women's basketball head coach Annette Watts has announced the completion of the class of 2011 with the addition of two more incoming freshmen for the 2007-08 season. Chloe Woodington and Ashley Lax both signed letters of intent to play at Davidson next year and will join Kelsey Cary and Kelly Gardner, who were signed early this season.
“My staff and I are extremely excited about our two new Wildcats,” said Watts, who finished her sixth year at Davidson by leading the Wildcats to a school-record 23 wins and a WNIT bid. She is just one win shy of 100 for her career. “Chloe and Ashley are both true competitors and have a great amount of basketball knowledge.”
Woodington comes to Davidson after an outstanding four-year prep career at Parkway High in Bossier, La. She capped her senior season with a nod on the all-state second team, and was a first team all-district and MVP for the third straight year. Woodington leaves Parkway as the all-time leading scorer and was named The Shreveport Times All-City Player of the Year this past season. She was also a first- and second-team member of the Shreveport Times All-City teams in 2005-06 and 2004-05, respectively.
A three-time team offensive MVP, Woodington has excelled in the classroom as she is the valedictorian of her class. She was named to the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Academic All-State composite team her senior season. In addition, she is a school ambassador, school treasurer and a member of the National Honor Society. Woodington was the class vice president her junior year and is a member of the Astra & Beta Club.
“Chloe is lighting quick and has great ball-handling skills,” said Watts. “Her scoring abilities come in a variety of ways from layups to the three-pointer. As valedictorian of her senior class, Chloe will continue the tradition of excellence at Davidson not only on the court, but also in the classroom.”
Named the top ranked small forward for Arkansas class of 2007 by Southern Starzz, Lax hails from Little Rock, Ark., where she attends Pulaski Academy. She averaged 23 points, four rebounds and three assists per game as a senior. Lax also chipped in with two blocks a game and pocketed four steals per contest.
Named the Female Athlete of the Year for 2006-07 season at Pulaski, Lax was nominated to the McDonald's All-American Team this past season as well as for the Arkansas Player of the Year by the Downtown Tip-Off Club. She was also named to the Parish Episcopal All-Tournament Team in Dallas (one of five selected out of 120) and to Arkansas' Best All-Tournament Team for 2006-07 (one of eight selected out of 220).
A three-time all-conference and all-district team member, Lax was ranked as the co-top shooting guard in Arkansas of the class of 2007 by Southern Starzz this year. She was also named to the Southern Starzz All-Sophomore Team in 2004-05 and for the past two seasons, named to the Southern Starzz All-Super Team.
Lax has not only starred on the court, but also in the classroom. The senior prepster was a AAA/State Farm Scholar Athlete nominee this year. Lax is a member of the National Honor Society, National Beta Club, National Hispanic Honor Society and part of FCA Leadership team. She is a Who's Who Among American High School Students, as well as a four-year honor roll student, while earning a spot on the president's list.
“Lax is a pure shooter and can handle the ball like a point guard,” said Watts. “She hails from a high school program where discipline and team work were top priorities. Ashley will fit into our system quickly and I look forward to watching her development in our program.”
