CHARLESTON, S.C. — Davidson's redshirt junior Katie Hamilton (Lilburn, Ga.) grabbed her second postseason honor in as many days, while senior Tia Washington (Charlotte, N.C.) joined Hamilton in earning a nod on the second team of the Southern Conference Sports Media Association (SCSMA) all-league team as announced Thursday afternoon. On Wednesday, Hamilton was named to the All-SoCon first team picked by the coaches.
For Hamilton , it was her fifth career postseason honor from the SoCon after earning Freshman of the Year in 2004, first team all-league for both the coaches and media teams in 2005, and her two awards this year. Washington, a three-time All-SoCon Academic team member and TIAA-CREF Student Athlete of the Week, earned a well-deserved nod on the team for her first all-league honor.
For the second straight year, Davidson placed two players on the media team. Senior Jessica Mitchell (Wilkesboro, N.C.) and Janell Crayton were named to the second team last season.
Hamilton and Washington both helped the Wildcats (23-7) advance to a semifinal matchup against second-seeded Chattanooga with a 71-62 victory over sixth-seeded Wofford in the morning session of the women's championship. Davidson's 23 wins is a single-season best.
Hamilton has gotten back on track after missing all of the 2005-06 season due to a torn ACL suffered in the preseason. She leads the second-highest scoring team in the SoCon (70.5) with a 10.7 points per game average. Hamilton paced the team in scoring eight different times, including the final two regular-season games of the year when she scored 13 and 14 points at Appalachian State and Furman, respectively.
Hamilton has also shown her sharp-shooting touch from downtown again as she is tops in the conference in three-point field goal percentage at a 38.4 percent clip. She ranks third all-time in program history with 137 three-balls.
Washington, who has been one of the best point guards in the SoCon the past three years, is the Wildcats' sparkplug on offense and defense. The senior ranks in the top-10 in the league in five categories, including second in field goal percentage (49.0) and first in assist/turnover ratio (1.74).
Washington has also been a threat to score as she is chipping in 9.2 points per game, and leads the Wildcats with 110 assists and 60 steals on the season. She is third all-time in Wildcat history in field goal percentage (50.6), while placing fourth in both assists (311) and steals (197) for her career.
Alex Anderson of Chattanooga was named the conference's Player of the Year by the media after leading the league in scoring (20.6), rebounding (10.4) and field goal percentage (51.7). Georgia Southern's Carolyn Whitney was tabbed the Freshman of the Year, while Kellie Harper was honored with Coach of the Year after leading Western Carolina to a share of the regular-season title. Anderson, Whitney and Harper also earned the same honors as picked by the league coaches.
The Wildcats semifinal game on Friday is slated for 2:30 p.m. The championship game will be played on Saturday, Mar. 3 at 2 p.m. on Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast. Every game played at the SoCon Tournament will be video streamed live on the internet on SoCon.tv.
