SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- For the fifth time in the past six years the Davidson women's tennis team won at least 17 matches in a season when the Wildcats concluded the regular-season with a 6-0 shutout win at Wofford on Sunday afternoon in their final tune up before the Southern Conference Tournament. Davidson ran its record to 17-6 and finished league play at 7-2. Wofford fell to 5-12 overall and ended SoCon play at 3-6.
The doubles duo of Kelsey Linville and Kim Whelan helped the Wildcats secure the doubles point when they won their 11th match of the season, defeating Adriane Hodges and Cayley Wetzig 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. Virginia Berry and Meredith Skeeters finished off the doubles play with an 8-5 win to give Davidson a 1-0 team lead.
Then in singles play, Linville, Berry and Whelan each wrapped up their regular-seasons with straight set wins to guide the Wildcats to victories at five of the six singles spots. Linville, 11-9 on the season, earned a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles.
Berry and Whelan each picked up their 16th and 15th wins of the season in singles play when they earned 6-1, 6-4 and 6-3, 6-0 wins at No. 2 and 3 positions.
After suffering her first-ever defeat in SoCon play the previous day at Furman, Lora Dushanova came back strong with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 win over McKenzie Carson at No. 4 singles. She is a perfect 3-0 when playing at No. 4 this season.
Davidson, who earned the third seed, will head to the SoCon Championships this coming week (Apr. 19-22) in Charleston, S.C. Last year, the Wildcats finished second after advancing all the way to the championship match.
