DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Davidson has been predicted to finish seventh in the 2007 Southern Conference men's soccer standings, and senior forward Robby Hoak has been voted to the preseason all-conference team as announced earlier this week. Both the preseason poll and team were voted on by the eight league head coaches.
Under the direction of seventh year head coach Matt Spear, who is 66-49-9 at the helm of his alma mater, the Wildcats look to return to their fourth appearance in the Southern Conference Championship in the last five seasons.
"Our preseason ranking underlines the crucial feature that we must prove ourselves," commented Spear. "Regardless of our history doing very well, it is only this Fall that is on our minds. The team and staff are very determined, perhaps more today than yesterday."
Hoak, a native of Raleigh, N.C., was the lone Wildcat selected to the 2007 Southern Conference preseason all-conference squad. The only player to start all 19 games for Davidson a year ago, the 6-4 striker has recored 34 points (14 goals & 6 assists) during his three-year Wildcat career. As a sophomore, Hoak ranked among league leaders in total points (ninth), goals (sixth) and goals per game (10th), despite starting just 12 of the 21 contests.
"Robby is a proven, experienced player in the SoCon, so this is a well-deserved honor. He is also a crucial leader in our team, and has a strong desire to play his very best soccer this fall," Spear said.
The Wildcats kickoff their 2007 annual campaign with a 7 p.m. match against St. Mary's in the fourth annual Davidson adidas Classic Friday, Sept. 1. Charlotte and San Jose State will also compete in the event played at Alumni Stadium next weekend.

Furman, which finished third in the league last season with a 4-2-1 conference mark, narrowly edged defending regular season and tournament champions, UNC Greensboro. The Paladins received five first-place votes and 46 points overall, while the Spartans garnered three first-place nods and 45 total points. Appalachian State finished third in the voting, ahead of Elon, College of Charleston and Georgia Southern.
