DAVIDSON, N.C. — Adam Lewicki and Ryan Crum, both whom will join the Davidson men's golf team this fall, recently qualified for the 2007 United States Junior Amateur, which will take place July 23-28 at Boone Valley Golf Club in Augusta, Mo.
Lewicki, a native of Avon, Conn., was the most recent of the two future Wildcats to qualify for the event, as he shared Individual Medalist honors at the Golf Club of Avon firing a 36-hole total of 140.
On June 18, Crum, who hails from South Salem, N.Y., earned the final spot at the Arcola Country Club (Paramus, N.J.) sectional thanks to a two-round score of 149.
“This is a great accomplishment for both Adam and Ryan,” commented Davidson head coach Tim Straub, who just completed his seventh season at the helm. “I'm really excited two of our recruits have qualified for the most prestigious junior event in all of golf.”
Straub, 16 at the time, claimed the 1983 U.S. Junior Amateur title when he defeated John Mahon 1 up on the Old Course of Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa. The two-time SoCon Coach of the Year finished runner-up the year before to become only the fourth player to reach the final match twice.
Along with Straub, the long list of past champions includes — Johnny Miller (1964), Gary Koch (1970), Brett Quigley (1987), David Duval (1989), Tiger Woods (1991, 1992, 1993) and Hunter Mahan (1999).
While it is not the oldest competition, the U.S. Junior Amateur is considered the premier junior competition, having been around since 1948. The event is open to male golfers who have not reached their 18th birthday prior to the close of competition and whose USGA Handicap Index does not exceed 6.4. The U.S. Junior is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
