FLORENCE, S.C. — Senior Alex Knoll continued his impressive play at the 2007 Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship with a second round score of two-under 70 to move into a tie for first individually, but Davidson shot a 300 to fall into tenth place Monday afternoon. The 54-hole event is being played on the 7,062-yard, par 72 Country Club of South Carolina layout.
Knoll, a co-captain from Bethlehem, Pa., opened with an even par 72 yesterday before recording his sixth sub-par score this campaign to climb six spots up the individual leaderboard, and share the 36-hole lead with Chattanooga's Jonathan Hodge, who fired a second round total of 69.
After making the turn at one-over 37, Knoll birdied the first and second, his 10th and 11th holes of the day to quickly move to one-under on his round and overall. Following six straight pars, the product of Liberty High tallied his final birdie on the 435-yard par four ninth for an inward nine of 33.
The last Wildcat to win the SoCon Individual Medalist was Rusty Boyd, who ironically claimed his 1973 crown at this year's host venue, the Country Club of South Carolina.
Davidson's Michael Saari, who shared seventh place with Knoll entering today's play, suffered a five-over 77 to fall into a tie for 23rd out of 50 players. Other Wildcat competitors include Ty White (+13/T-44th), Steve Mayo (+15/T-46th) and David Fowler (+23/50th).
Nationally-ranked Chattanooga (293-280=573) carded an impressive eight-under 280 on its second 18 holes of competition to stretch its team lead to seven strokes over Georgia Southern, who also went into red figures this afternoon with a 284 (-4) to sit at plus-four 580 through two days of play.
The final round of the 2007 Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship will tee off at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Live Scoring is available through www.golfstat.com.
