Volleyball Picked Fifth in SoCon Preseason Poll, Pierucci Named All-SoCon

DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson Wildcats volleyball team has been picked to finish fifth in the 2007 Southern Conference preseason poll, while senior team captain Katie Pierucci has been named to the All-SoCon preseason team by the league's coaches, as announced earlier today by the conference office.
"We are looking forward to conference play," head coach Tim Cowie said. "We are never too concerned about preseason polls; we are more concerned about the postseason. I am pleased that the conference coaches would honor Katie Pierucci by naming her to the preseason all-conference team."
The College of Charleston has been selected to finish first in the conference once again, after winning their third consecutive title in 2006. The Cougars (27-7, 17-1) received eight first-place votes for a total of 97 points. Furman finished second with three first-place votes (93 points), with Appalachian State (80 points) coming in just ahead of UNC Greensboro (71 points).
Davidson (18-16, 10-8 in 2006) and Chattanooga each received 60 points to finish fifth, with Elon (48), Georgia Southern (37), Western Carolina (25), Wofford (23) and The Citadel (11) rounding out the poll.
Pierucci represents the Wildcats on the All-SoCon preseason team, after posting 442 kills, 95 assists, 37 aces, 361 digs and 64 blocks last season. She enters the season with 1,254 kills (sixth all-time), 310 assists, 97 aces, 182 blocks and 846 digs in 367 career games. With a career attack percentage (1254-593-3329) of .200, she ranks 10th all-time on the Davidson career list.
Davidson will open the 2007 season on Friday, traveling to Greensboro to take on UNC Wilmington at 12 p.m. and Radford at 5 p.m.
