DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson won five of the six singles contests, including three that went the distance to end a five-match losing streak with a 6-1 victory over The Citadel in Southern Conference men's tennis action Friday afternoon at Covington Tennis Courts. With the win, the Wildcats improve to 7-14 overall and 2-6 in league play, while the Bulldogs fall to 2-17 and remain winless in the conference at 0-6.
After Davidson's duo of Flaviu Simihaian and John Bolton dropped the opening doubles match to the nationally-ranked tandem of James Eason and Daniel Dossetor, the Wildcats claimed the second and third affairs to grab an early 1-0 team advantage.
Despite falling in partners play, Simihaian quickly rebounded with a come-from-behind three-set triumph over Dossetor at the top singles spot. The Wildcats also got victories from Ethan Jaffee (6-1, 2-6, 6-3), Scott Meyers (6-1, 6-0), Eric Noble (4-6, 6-2, 6-2) and Phillip Compeau (6-1, 6-2). The Citadel's lone singles win came from second-seeded James Eason, who defeated Bolton, 6-4, 6-3.
Davidson will enjoy a lengthy break before concluding its 2007 regular season with a match at UNC Greensboro April 14. Prior to the Spartans' make-up contest with the Wildcats, The Citadel will finish its road swing with a 12 p.m. dual at UNCG tomorrow.
