DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson College juniors Sam Morris (Seattle, Wash.) and Kelsey Linville (Columbus, Ohio) recently were named two of 22 student-athletes that were recipients of the second annual Coleman Lew Award as announced by the Coleman Lew & Associates, Inc., a national executive search firm, and the Southern Conference. Recipients were recognized at the SoCon Honors Dinner on Wednesday, May 30.
The award recognizes scholar-athletes from each of the Southern Conference's 11 member institutions. Coaches, faculty athletic representatives and senior woman administrators nominate prospective candidates based on leadership, academic excellence and athletic achievement in both the college environment and the community. Athletic directors and representatives from Coleman Lew & Associates conducted one-on-one interviews with the finalists before determining the award recipients.
Morris, a captain on the men's cross country team this past fall, is a two-year SoCon All-Academic team member in both cross country, and indoor and outdoor track. The junior was awarded the Fred Borch Award for cross country as a sophomore.
Linville helped lead the women's tennis team to an 18-7 overall record this spring, the fifth time in six years Davidson has won at least 17 matches in a season. Davidson also was ranked as high as 66th during the season in the FILA Collegiate Women's Tennis Rankings, the first time it found itself among the nation's best since the 2005 campaign.
The Wildcats No. 1 singles player the past two years and a tri-captain this season, Linville has garnered all-conference each of her three years at Davidson, including first-team honors the past two seasons. She earned the SoCon Freshman of the Year award in 2005 after an impressive 22-2 mark in singles play.
Last season, the Wildcats' seniors Tia Washington (Charlotte, N.C. -- Women's Basketball) and Mac Wilkie (Jamesville, N.Y. -- Men's Soccer) were honored with the award for Davidson.
