Mackey Joins Men's Soccer Coaching Staff

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson head men's soccer coach Matt Spear recently announced that Jon Mackey will be joining his staff as an assistant coach for the 2007 season. Mackey was a two-time NCAA All-American and captain as a goalkeeper at SUNY Brockport from 1996-99.
“I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to work alongside such an experienced staff,” commented Mackey. “I'm excited to prepare the goalkeepers for a long and challenging season. The difficult game schedule this season will put great emphasis on maintaining focus and getting the most out of trainings. My coaching philosophy is simple - the commitment you make to training and preparation will determine your outcome on the field. I hope to inspire the goalkeepers to become the players they want to be.”
Along with his long list of playing accomplishments at SUNY Brockport, Mackey was also an NCAA Academic All-American. In 2000, he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health / Physical Education.
“The fact that he was an All American is awesome,” said Spear, who returns for his seventh season at the helm of his alma mater, where he holds the program's best winning percentage. “But equally important and impressive is that he was also an Academic All-American. He understands and believes in our emphasis on the concept of a scholar-athlete.”
After a successful collegiate career, Mackey enjoyed playing stints with the NY Empire State Team (1998-2000), Ocean City Barons (1999) and Rochester Raging Rhinos (2000). Mackey returned to his alma mater following graduation to begin his coaching career as the Golden Eagles goalkeeper's coach. He also led the club's offseason training programs for each keeper, which included nutritional routines.
Outside of his duties at Davidson, Mackey serves on the North Carolina ODP staff and as the Director of Goalkeeping with the Lake Norman Soccer Club.

Mackey holds a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) National Goalkeeping Certification.
