DAVIDSON, N.C. - Rising seniors Courtney Cron and Katie Pierucci have been named team captains of the 2007 Davidson Volleyball team, as announced by head coach Tim Cowie.
"It's never easy to decide who should represent the team as captains from year to year," Cowie said. "But in our case, Courtney and Katie have risen to the top and shouldered responsibility for our team."
Cron, a libero from Louisville, Ky., appeared in all 34 matches last season for the 'Cats and led the team in service aces (47). Her 424 digs were the 10th-best individual performance in program history, and she received a team-high 62 serves to go along with 41 assists and four kills. An English major and three-year letter winner, Cron has appeared in 87 matches with 578 digs, 69 service aces, 61 assists and 52 kills.
"Courtney's work ethic was reflected in our team awards this year," Cowie said. "Her willingness to take responsibility for the welfare and success of our team makes her a great choice as our captain."
An outside hitter from Bakersfield, Calif., Pierucci started all 34 matches for Davidson in 2006 and posted 442 kills (3.40 per game), second on the team behind former standout Liz Williamson and was among team leaders in assists (95), service aces (37), digs (361) and blocks (64). The history major and three-year letter winner, Pierucci has appeared in 99 matches with 310 assists, 182 total blocks and 846 digs. She enters the season in sixth-place all-time with 1,254 career kills and is ranked 10th in career service aces (97).
"Katie is not only willing to take on the responsibility for the success of the team on the court, but she has really made an effort to lead the team in the role of one of its captains," Cowie said.
Davidson finished the 2006 season with an 18-16 overall record. Behind a 10-8 conference record, the 'Cats earned the fourth seed and first-round bye in the 2006 Southern Conference Tournament.
"Ultimately, the success of the team in 2007 will not rest solely on our two captains," Cowie said. "Each member of the team must take a leadership role and make the captains' responsibility a team effort."
