CHARLESTON, S.C. — College of Charleston ended Davidson's 2007 campaign with a 4-2 victory in the semifinals of the 2007 Southern Conference Women's Tennis Tournament. The Wildcats concluded the season 18-7, while Charleston moves on with a 19-6 mark.
After the two clubs split the second and third doubles matches, College of Charleston grabbed an early 1-0 team advantage when Holly Dowse and Anna Lee Evans clinched the point with an 8-3 win over the Wildcats' Kelsey Linville and Kim Whelan.
Davidson took its first lead (2-1) of the afternoon when Linville and Michele Fanney recorded straight set singles triumphs at the top spots, respectively. Linville, an All-SoCon performer for the third consecutive season defeated Chelsea Albertz 6-2, 6-2, while Fanney needed just two more games to knock off Link Leskosky, 6-2, 6-4.
College of Charleston wasted little time evening the match as Dowse recorded her second win of the dual with a 6-2, 7-5 defeat of sophomore Lora Dushanova. Dowse's win was the first of three straight to close out the contest for the Cougars and clinch the affair.
Evans, like Dowse, finished with a pair of wins as she defeated Kim Whelan at the No. 4 singles spot, while Amanda Becker defeated Meredith Skeeters of Davidson to provide the College of Charleston with the difference maker.
The Cougars will take on the top-seeded Furman Paladins tomorrow at 10 a.m. in the 2007 Southern Conference Women's Tennis Championship at the Earle Tennis Center.
