BOONE, N.C. -- Freshman Kristen Meister, junior captain Brenna Burns and sophomore Kim Colley rewrote the Wildcat record books and paced the Davidson women's track and field team, who stand in fifth place after the first day of competition at the 2007 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Meister placed first and broke the SoCon record in the high jump, while Burns used a runner-up finish to do the same in the 10,000 meters, and Colley qualified for the finals in the 200 meters in school-record time.
"What a great first day for the Wildcat women!" head coach Jen Straub said. "We got some really strong performances from Kristen and Brenna, who continually perform at the highest level! And Kim qualified for the finals, so I am extremely proud of her. It was a great day for our team!"
Meister's jump of 1.78 meters (5-10.00) bests the league record of 1.77-meters set by Western Carolina's Virginia LaCombe in 2001. She also bests her own school record of 1.75 meters (5-8.75) from earlier in the season. Meister also holds the league and school record in the indoor version of the event and was named SoCon Indoor Track and Field Freshman of the Year.
Burns placed second in the 10,000 meters in a new school record time of 35:48.41 (converted to 35:15.41 based on NCAA altitude adjustment) and also besting the SoCon record previously held by Appalachian State's Whitney Ball (36:05.16, 1990). Chattanooga's Lanni Marchant won the event in a new league-record time of 35:06.53 (34.33.53). Burns time replaces the Wildcat standard of 38:04.10 by Emily King at last year's SoCons.
Colley posted the third school-record mark of the days for the 'Cats, as she qualified for the finals in the 200 meters with an all-time Davidson-best time of 24.81 in the preliminaries. Colley's time smashes Katurri Phillips' record of 25.60 from last season.
After day one of competition, Georgia Southern paces the field with 47.50 points with Appalachian State in a close second with 40.50 points. Chattanooga (26) and Western (24) also lead the 'Cats, who are in fifth place with 18 points. The Citadel (16), Elon (8), Furman (7), College of Charleston (7) and Wofford (1) complete the field, which will wrap up competition tomorrow.
