DAVIDSON, N.C. - After pacing the Wildcat men's swimming and diving team throughout the season, sophomores Merritt Peele and Scott Frantz, Jr. earned All-CAA honors based on their performances at the 2007 Colonial Athletic Association Championships in February.
Peele earned All-CAA honors in the 200, 500 and 1650 freestyle events and finished with a four-day points total of 50, the seventh highest among male competitors. The sophomore from San Antonio, Texas, placed third and set a new school record in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:41.28, besting the five year-old Davidson standard set by Robert Koch in 2002. His second place 4:32.08 in the 500 freestyle also smashed Churchill Hoof's 11-year-old college record, and he finished second in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 15:56.23. Peele is also a Wildcat top-10 performer in the 50, 100 and 1000 freestyle events and received All-CAA honors in 2006 for his contributions to the 800 freestyle relay.
"Merritt capped off a great season with some special performances at the CAA meet," head coach John Young said. "I'm especially proud of the way he came back faster at night; that competitive instinct will treat him well as he continues his assault on our record books."
Frantz earned All-CAA honors with a third-place finish in the 100 backstroke, finishing with a time of 51.84. Earlier in the meet, Frantz began the Wildcats' school-record setting 400 medley relay with a 50.99 backstroke split, matching Charlie Hunter's 2004 school-record time in the event. Also a Wildcat top-10 performer in the 200 backstroke, Frantz was a 2006 CAA championship finalist in the 100 (5th) and 200 backstroke (8th) events.
