
No. 1 Elon Ends Davidson's Run at SoCon Championships in M. Tennis

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Davidson's run at the men's tennis Southern Conference Championships came to an end in the quarterfinals when No. 1 seeded Elon defeated the Wildcats 4-0 on Friday, Apr. 20 on the campus of The Citadel. Davidson had reached the quarters after a 4-2 win over UNC Greensboro in the opening round.
The Wildcats concluded their 2007 campaign with an 8-16 overall record and saw the program's 34-year streak of winning at least 10 matches in a season come to an end. Elon ran its record to 21-2 and will play the winner of the Chattanooga/Appalachian State match in the semifinals tomorrow.
Davidson fell behind early, 1-0, after dropping two of the three doubles matches. Phillip Compeau and Eric Noble were leading 6-5, but did not finish since the Phoenix had won the first two slots.
In singles, the Wildcats played the Phoenix tough as they forced two tie-breakers in two of the matches and extended two other matches to three sets. Ethan Jaffee and Scott Myers both forced their opponent's to tie breakers, and Jaffee had won his, but did not finish the match due to Elon earning the necessary four team points.
The Wildcats' No. 1, Flaviu Simihaian, forced Damon Gooch to a three-setter and Sam Burns, who was leading 5-1 in his third set, did the same, but Elon closed out the match with wins at No. 4 and 5 singles to go along with a win at No. 2 to take the 4-0 decision.
