CHARLESTON, S.C. – Playing UNC Greensboro for the second time in less than a week, the Davidson men's tennis team regrouped after falling 6-1 to the Spartans in their final regular season match with a 4-2 first-round match win on opening day of the Southern Conference Championships. Davidson ran its overall record to 8-15, while UNCG ends the 2007 season with a 7-15 mark.
Davidson, seeded ninth and having only won one match in its past seven, took an early 1-0 lead thanks again to its strong doubles play. The Wildcats all year have had very consistent doubles play, showcasing a 41-25 team record. Earning the Wildcats first win was junior Phillip Compeau and freshman Eric Noble when they secured an 8-4 win at No. 3 to move their season record to 13-5 as a team.
Then freshman Sam Burns and sophomore Ethan Jaffee sealed the team point with their ninth win, 8-2, as a duo at No. 2 over Martin Redelinghuys and Ian Conchar. Jaffee helped the Wildcats push their lead out to 2-0 thanks to a straight set 6-2, 6-4, triumph at No. 3 singles.
But, the Spartans tied things up with wins at the No. 4 and 2 spots.
Junior No. 1 Flaviu Simihaian earned his third three-set victory of the season when he defeated Andrey Bubnov 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 to give Davidson a slim 3-2 advantage.
Freshman Sam Burns sealed the win with a three-set thriller at No. 6 to give the win to the Wildcats. After dropping the first set, 6-0, Burns battled it out with William Adeimy then in the next two sets in tie breakers taking both of them by the count of 7-6.
Davidson's task does not get any easier at the championships as it will battle the No. 1 seeded, and nationally ranked, Elon Phoenix in the second round on Friday at 10 a.m. No. 43 Elon concluded the regular season with a 20-2 overall mark.
