NCAA Qualifier Burns Nabs Pair of Weekly SoCon Awards

DAVIDSON, N.C. - After setting a school record and qualifying for the NCAA regional in the 5,000 meters at the Duke Asics Invitational this weekend, junior captain Brenna Burns has been named both Southern Conference Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week and TIAA-CREF Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of April 11.
Burns finished sixth in an NCAA qualifying time of 16:51.35 in the 5,000 meters, becoming the first woman Davidson runner and second to qualify for the NCAA regional this season. Freshman Kristen Meister qualified in the high jump at the Wake Forest Open.
Burns bettered her own record of 17:03.89 in the event, set at Wake Forest earlier in the season. Sophomore Caroline Sanker held the record entering the season (17:45.13).
In the classroom, the psychology major boasts a 3.979 GPA and is a member of the Southern Conference Academic All-Conference team.
It is the second time Burns, who was named Indoor Track Athlete of the Week and TIAA-CREF Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Jan. 31, has been honored with each weekly award. She also holds the school record in the indoor 3,000 and 5,000 meters and was named the 2007 Southern Conference Women's Indoor Track Performer of the Year.
