CHARLESTON, S.C. — Redshirt junior Katie Hamilton (Lilburn, Ga.) capped off her return from missing all of the 2005-06 season with a spot on this year's All-Southern Conference coaches team as announced by the league office before the start of the SoCon Championship Tournament in Charleston, S.C., Feb. 27-Mar. 3. Hamilton has gotten back on track after missing all of the 2005-06 season due to a torn ACL suffered in the preseason.
She leads the second-highest scoring team in the SoCon (70.5) with a 10.7 points per game average. Hamilton paced the team in scoring eight different times, including the final two regular-season games of the year when she scored 13 and 14 points at Appalachian State and Furman, respectively.
Hamilton has also shown her sharp-shooting touch from downtown again as she is tops in the conference in three-point field goal percentage at a 38.4 percent clip. She ranks third all-time in program history with 137 three-balls. In addition to her scoring presence, she has also hustled her way to an even five rebounds a game, including a combined 16 boards in the last two wins.
Just two years ago the junior shooting guard was second in the conference in scoring at 15.8 points per game, earning her first All-SoCon honor.
Alex Anderson of Chattanooga was named the conference's Player of the Year after leading the league in scoring (20.6), rebounding (10.4) and field goal percentage (51.7). Georgia Southern's Carolyn Whitney was tabbed the Freshman of the Year, while Kellie Harper was honored with Coach of the Year after leading Western Carolina to a share of the regular-season title.
Third-seeded Davidson will play on Thursday in the quarterfinals against sixth-seeded Wofford, beginning 30 minutes after the conclusion of the 9 a.m. game. The Terriers finished tied with Georgia Southern for fifth in the SoCon with a 7-11 record and a 13-15 overall mark. Both teams split their season series with each winning on their home floor, but Davidson has won 10 of the past 11 meetings.
The Wildcats finished the regular season with a school-best 22 wins against only seven defeats and their 13 conference wins were good for the second-most in school history.
Should the Wildcats advance, they would play in the semifinals on Friday at 2:30 p.m. The championship game will be played on Saturday, Mar. 3 at 2 p.m. on Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast. Every game played at the SoCon Tournament will be video streamed live on the internet on SoCon.tv. The radio broadcast of each Davidson game can also be heard on TEAMLINE, over the internet (www.teamline.cc) or the phone (800-846-4700, team code 1143).
