CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Davidson's women's cross country team is one of 145 teams honored as a 2006 NCAA Division I All-Academic Cross Country Team by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Coaches Association, announced Thursday by the organization.
The Wildcat women, winners of the 2005 Southern Conference crown and third-place finishers in 2006, are equally successful off the path, boasting a team GPA of 3.125 in the classroom.
A total of 145 teams received Division I Women's All-Academic Cross Country Team honors for the 2006 season. To be honored as an All-Academic Team, teams were required to compete in an NCAA regional meet and have at least a cumulative GPA of 3.0.
The national champion Stanford Cardinal was named the 2006 NCAA Division I All-Academic Women's Cross Country Team of the Year, and Colorado standout Jenny Barringer, who finished second at the NCAA Championships, was named the All-Academic Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Year.
The All-Academic Cross Country Team of the Year is awarded to the highest-finishing school at the NCAA Championships that meets All-Academic team qualifications (a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA during the 2006 fall term).
Stanford's Peter Tegen was named the national coach of the year. In the classroom, Tegen's team sported a cumulative team grade point average of 3.470.
