Peele, Ream Smash Davidson Records in 500 Free on Day Two of CAAs

FAIRFAX, Va. - Sophomore standouts Merritt Peele and Alanna Ream each smashed Davidson records in the 500 freestyle on the second day of competition in the 2007 Colonial Athletic Association Championships on the campus of George Mason. With 104 points, the men's swimming and diving team jumped up two spots to eighth place, while the women are in seventh place with 101 points.
With a time of 4:32.08, Peele finished second and smashed an 11-year-old Davidson record in the 500 free, besting Churchill Hooff's time of 4:33.07 from Feb. 15, 1996. Peele then swam with sophomore Scott Frantz and freshmen Nate Ladner and Miller Williams on the fourth-place 400 medley relay team that set a new school record with a combined time of 3:25.71. The previous record of 3:25.75 was held by Terry Dolch, Matt Lake, Scott Harper and Dave Maddux, set on Feb. 12, 1998.
Ream also broke the school record in the 500 free with a fifth-place finish in a time of 5:02.06. Senior Ellie Trefzger previously held the school's top time in the event at 5:04.57, set on Feb. 19, 2004. Ream also holds the school's 1000 and 1650 freestyle events, set at last year's CAAs.
Top-10 performer Will Broughton finished eighth in the event with a time of 4:39.55, while sophomore Andrew Carlson finished 15th with a time of 4:44.25 in the consolation final.
Ladner swam onto the Wildcat top-10 performers list with an 11th-place finish in the 200 individual medley consolation final (1:54.83), while top-10 performers Scott Foster (12th, 1:54.93) and Adam Topaz (14th, 1:55.92) improved on their times.
On the one-meter springboard, junior Dwight Swift earned points for the 'Cats with a mark of 161.25 in the preliminaries.
For the women, top-10 performer Courtney Sanders represented the 'Cats in the 50 free, and with a 14th-place finish in a time of 24.42, improved on her time of 24.92 from last year's CAAs. Sanders also swam with senior Brigit Barry and freshmen Caroline Curtiss and Martha Culp on the eighth-place 400 medley relay with a combined time of 3:59.90.
William and Mary leads the women's competition with 234 points, followed by UNC Wilmington (198.5) and George Mason (197.5). Towson (180), Delaware (119) and Northeastern (112) also lead the 'Cats.
On the men's side, George Mason holds the lead with 211 points, followed by James Madison (206) and UNC Wilmington (193). Towson (147), William and Mary (141), Old Dominion (118) and Delaware (110) are ahead of the Wildcat men.
