DAVIDSON, N.C. — As the Davidson Wildcat swimming and diving team gears up for a post-holiday training trip, the Wildcat women will enter the second half of the season ranked 10th in the latest Division I mid-major poll by collegeswimming.com.
"The men and women both have a lot to be proud of from first semester," head coach John Young said.
The women's team has slipped a spot, down from ninth, but remain in the top 10 behind the debut of an impressive freshmen class as well as valuable contributions from several upperclassmen.
"I'm glad that our women remain recognized," Young said. "But we all need to stay focused on our season's real goal."
Entering the second semester, the Wildcat women boast an overall record of 3-3 and are 2-1 in the inaugural season of the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association, which will host its championship in Huntersville on Feb. 21-23.
Freshman Lindsey Martin has already set a pair of Davidson records, swimming top times in the 50 free (23.53) and 100 free (50.82), and is a member of three record-setting relay teams — the 200, 400 and 800 freestyle relays. At the Nike Invitational at Kenyon College, she became the second Wildcat swimmer to swim an NCAA Championship B cut time, in the 100 free. Her times in both the 50 and 100 free are the best in the league, and she remains the only CCSA swimmer to have broken the 24 second barrier in the 50 free.
Classmates Anna Stringfield and Emily Castle also broke records in their debut season — Stringfield, in the 200 free (1:52.92); Castle, the 100 fly (57.79), while junior Alanna Ream improved on her own record in the 500 free (5:00.81).
Along with Martin, Stringfield and Castle, junior Courtney Sanders, sophomore Caitlin Sheetz and freshmen Alexa Richardson and Jessica Delgehausen are members of the three record-setting relays for the 'Cats thus far this season.
The Wildcat swimming and diving team will return to action on Jan. 3 as they participate in the Deerfield Beach Classic in Deerfield, Fla., and back to Cannon Natatorium on Jan. 12 as they host Duke and South Carolina at 1 p.m.
