GAMBIER, Ohio — As the competition heated up at the second annual Nike Invitational on the campus of Kenyon College, Wildcat swimmers broke or tied six Davidson College records and earned 22 spots in the evening session during Friday's competition.
Senior Fiete Stegger started the record breaking for the 'Cats, rewriting his own school record in the 50 free with a time of 21.31 in the morning's preliminaries.
“Fiete's 50 was outstanding and well-deserved,” Young said. “He's been a great leader for this team – he sets the tone for us. Him lowering his record at our season's half-way is a testament to his performance mentality.”
Freshman Lindsey Martin matched her own record in the same event with a runner-up time of 23.53 in the Super Finals. Martin was one of four Wildcat swimmers to earn a spot in the evening's Super-Final heat, with the top six swimmers from the morning's preliminary advancing.
Junior Scott Frantz was another Wildcat to do the same, breaking his own school record with a runner-up time of 50.53 in the Super Final.
"Scott finally took his race out like he can, did it twice, and has two lifetime bests to show for it,” Young said. “It was fun watching him race today.”
Both the men's and women's 200 freestyle relays set new school records. On the men's side, Frantz, junior Miguel Rodriguez, freshman Patrick Whitman and Stegger placed fifth with a new record time of 1:24.48, bettering a record that had stood since Feb. 18, 1999. Mike Warner, Bill Paterson, Matt West and Scott Harper were members of the former relay-holding team (1:24.68).
For the women, junior Courtney Sanders, freshman Emily Castle, freshman Alexa Richardson and freshman Lindsey Martin finished third with a time of 1:36.89. The previous record time of 1:37.12 was held by Martin, Richardson, Castle and freshmen Jessica Delgehausen from Nov. 17.
“Both freestyle relays had great energy tonight,” Young said. “I'm so proud of our athletes for the way they are performing against the best competition that we've seen this season.”
Freshman Anna Stringfield rewrote the school record in the 200 freetyle with a third-place time of 1:52.93 in the Super Final. She also earned a spot in the Super Final of the 400 IM, where she finished fourth with a time of 4:30.37.
Fellow classmate Jessica Delgehausen was the final Wildcat to earn a spot in a Super Final, representing the women in the 200 freestyle with a fifth-place time of 1:53.68, faster than her prelim swim.
All told, the Wildcats earned 22 spots in the evening's finals with performances in the prelims.
Junior Andrew Carlson swam a best time in the 200 freestyle (1:42.99) prelims, earning a spot in the consolation final and moving up Davidson's all-time performer list. He then bettered that time with a ninth-place mark of 1:42.73 in the evening's finals.
“Andrew's 200 was one of the best swims of the prelims,” Young said. “He's come so far in his ability to control his races, and this morning he executed well.”
In the women's 50 freestyle, freshman Emily Castle established herself as Davidson's second fastest all-time performer, behind classmate Martin. She swam a 24.28 in the morning session and then finished ninth with a time of 24.22 in the consolation final.
The meet's competition will wrap up tomorrow, with prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
