Thursday's Results
GAMBIER, Ohio — Freshman Anna Stringfield set a new Davidson College record in the 200 freestyle, highlighting a strong opening night for the Wildcat men's and women's swimming and diving teams at the second annual Nike Invitational on the campus of Kenyon College.
Stringfield set the new record with a leadoff leg of 1:52.94 for the Wildcat's 800 freestyle relay, displacing Kristen Shield's time of 1:53.42 from Feb. 12, 2006.
Freshman Lindsey Martin, sophomore Caitlin Sheetz and freshman Jessica Delgehausen followed Stringfield, as the group finished fourth and lowered their own college record by more than three seconds with a time of 7:34.87. Their previous best of 7:37.56 came at the Davidson Invitational on Nov. 16.
“We had an awesome first night,” head coach John Young said. “ We had great relay splits on all the women's relays. Fiete had a great leadoff for the men's 800 freestyle relay, and the other splits were solid.”
Thursday's competition featured just four timed finals — the 800 freestyle relay and the 1650 freestyle in both men's and women's competition.
In the men's 1650, senior Will Broughton turned in a solid mid-season performance with a time of 16:08 to finish seventh.
“The way he's been training this season, I'm not surprised that Will executed such a solid mile,” Young said. “He's been steady, and that consistency will serve him well as we prepare for our conference championship.”
In the women's 1650 freestyle, Sheetz swam a lifetime best by almost ten seconds to move up the list of Davidson Top Performers, and junior Alanna Ream swam within two seconds of her college record. Ream finished fourth with a time of 17:12.75, while Sheetz's time of 17:39.13 was good for 14th.
“I'm so proud of our female milers,” Young said. “Caitlin and Alana both swam great races. For Alanna to approach her record time at this point in her season is a great boost and a sign of great things to come!”
In the men's 800 freestyle relay, senior Fiete Stegger, junior Andrew Carlson, Broughton and junior Merritt Peele used a season-best time of 6:58.23 for a ninth-place finish.
Competition will continue on Friday and into Saturday. Tomorrow's prelims begin at 10 a.m., with finals scheduled for 6 p.m. For complete Invitational information, visit athletics.kenyon.edu.
