DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson head volleyball coach Tim Cowie has announced the addition of junior middle blocker Kittery Neale as a team captain, joining classmate Brittany Narr in the role for the 2008-09 season.
"I am pleased to announce the addition of Kittery as a team captain for the 2008-09 season," Cowie said. "I had intended to wait until the preseason in the fall, but believe that Brittany and our team can only benefit from my doing so earlier. Kittery has been a dedicated member of our team for the past three years, and I am confident she will be a great leader for our team in the upcoming season."
Neale, a mathematics major from Gainesville, Fla., appeared in 30 matches and 107 games for the Wildcats last season, recording 313 kills and 97 blocks as a middle blocker. Over the course of her three-year career, Neale has appeared in 97 matches and 360 games with 924 kills, 323 blocks, 196 digs, 22 assists and 28 aces.
"It is a privilege to be given this opportunity," Neale said. "I look forward to working with Brittany and the senior class throughout the season. The hard work this team put forth this spring and the strong freshmen class should make way for a great season next fall."
Narr, a political science major from Hopkins, Minn., has appeared in 47 matches and 88 games for the Wildcats over her three-year career with 52 total blocks and 58 kills.
“Brittany was, without a second thought, my obvious choice for captain,” Cowie said. “Her great work ethic and dedication to the program has earned her the respect of everyone on this team.”
“I am so honored and excited to be chosen as captain,” Narr said. “Next year is going to be a great year; we ended this season with some strong wins and will hopefully continue that pattern next year. Tim has brought together a strong team for next season, and I'm looking forward to seeing what we can achieve with our hard work, commitment and teamwork.”
The pair take over for outgoing captains Courtney Cron and Katie Pierucci. Cron appeared in 118 matches and 375 games over a four-year career, collecting 91 assists, 97 aces and 813 digs. Pierucci appeared in 129 matches and 473 games in four seasons, and finished her career ranked in the program's top 10 in kills (fourth, 1,642), aces (T-fourth, 153), digs (seventh, 1,246) and games played (seventh, 473).
The Wildcats finished the season with a 12-20 overall record and went 7-11 in the Southern Conference.
