DAVIDSON, N.C. -- After having its four-game unbeaten streak ended Wednesday evening to nationally-ranked Duke, Davidson looks to begin a new run as it hosts SoCon rival College of Charleston in its annual “Senior Day” match Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
“College of Charleston is a great Conference rival, and they are having a super season,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear.
A Wildcat victory paired with a UNC Greensboro setback at Elon Saturday evening would give Davidson the fourth seed, meaning it would host the Spartans in the opening round of the Southern Conference tournament next weekend.
Led by reigning SoCon Player of the Week Corbin Waller, the Courgars enter on a six-game winning streak, which includes four shutouts, running his season total to nine.
“College of Charleston is a great Conference rival, and they are having a super season. Goalkeeper Corbin Waller is excellent, proven by the team's impressive nine shutouts.”
Along with today's match being a crucial conference affair, the Wildcats will honor their five seniors prior to kickoff.
“It's Senior Day and we would like to thank and honor Jon Bassett, Robby Hoak, Aaron West, Tom Lavan and Ben Ashton. They have given a lot of heart and soul to Davidson Soccer. Although Jon and Ben can't compete today due to illness and injury, respectively, their impact on this team and program are valuable.”
Coaches: Davidson Matt Spear, now in his seventh season at the helm of his alma mater, is 69-59-10. College of Charleston Ralph Lundy is 371-237-40 in 30 years as a collegiate head coach.
Series: College of Charleston holds a slim 10-9 advantage of the Wildcats.
Last Meeting: Jeremy Gold's hat trick lifted the Cougars over Davidson 3-1 in Charleston, S.C., Sept. 30, 2006.
