Clavette Takes Second, 'Cats Place Seventh at Navy Classic

Annapolis, Md. - Senior Trebor Clavette took second for the second consecutive week, while sophomore Ben Altman placed fourth to lead the Davidson wrestling team to a seventh-place finish at the Navy Classic Saturday.
Clavette won his first three matches at 174 before falling 8-6 to Navy's Matt Stolpinski in the championship. Altman won his first match at 125 by technical fall (18-0) but fell 7-2 to eventual second-place finisher Greg Hart in the quarterfinals. Altman won three matches in the wrestleback bracket before falling 13-4 in the third-place match.
Sam O'Hair finished fifth at 184. The junior pinned his first opponent but lost a 4-2 decision in the quarterfinals. He won two matches in wrestlebacks before losing in the semifinals of the bracket. O'Hair then defeated Keith Dobish of Rutgers 7-5 for fifth place.
Sophomore Mike Waters won his first match over Brad Pendock of Navy but suffered a 5-2 loss in the quarterfinals. He defeated Shawn Logue 7-4 in wrestlebacks, but injuries forced him to concede to Navy's Matt Reck in the quarterfinals of the bracket.
Vitali Radsky lost his first match and rallied for a 14-0 victory in wrestlebacks. An unlucky draw pitted the freshman against Altman, and he suffered a 13-2 loss to his teammate.
Freshman Alex Radsky won his first match 8-0 at 133 but suffered an 8-2 setback in the second round and a 3-1 loss in wrestlebacks. Carl Sandercock, competing in his second tournament after missing the 2006-07 campaign with an injury, lost his first match at 141 and fell 8-3 to Liberty's Colon Lewis in wrestlebacks.
Scott Matthews pinned his first opponent at 149 and fell 8-1 in his second bout. The junior lost 14-3 in wrestlebacks. Joe McGinley defeated Justin Bowers of Navy 5-3 but lost to Bucknell's Tyler Riccio in the second round. The freshman won 11-5 in his first match of wrestlebacks but suffered a 7-4 decision to Matt King of Campbell.
Freshman Charlie Wolff picked up a 3-1 victory in the opening round of the heavyweight division but lost to top seed Scott Steele in the second round. He fell 3-2 to eventual fifth-place finisher George Hinson in wrestlebacks. Newcomer Danny Culpepper lost his first two matches at 165.
Bloomsburg won the tournament with 161.5 points, and Navy finished second with 140. Bucknell was third, followed by Rutgers, Liberty and George Mason.
Davidson is back in action Saturday, Dec. 1, as the Wildcats host the Davidson Open in the Baker Sports Complex.
