DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson Women's basketball program returned to the state of Pennsylvania to find its next recruiting class and came away with three very exceptional student-athletes in the early signing period as announced by head coach Annette Watts.
The class of 2012 welcomes forwards Logan Hartman and Kristen Johnsen, and guard/forward Amanda Ottaway to the Wildcat program next year.
"These three were the three we wanted and went after," said head coach Annette Watts, entering her seventh season at Davidson. "Geographic location had nothing to do with it, although the Davidson women's basketball program has found great success when recruiting the state of Pennsylvania with the likes of former Wildcat players in Leah Uhernik, the Brown sisters (Jamie and Kerry), 1,000-pointer scorer Jessica Montrella, Kristin Ferrucci, Molly Burke and Erin Butcher. The staff and I believe the latest Quaker state signees will continue that successful trend."
Hartman is a native of New Wilmington, Pa., where she has played the past three years at New Castle high school. The 6-1 forward shot over 50 percent from the field last year, while averaging 12.2 points per game. Hartman also nearly averaged a double-double, pulling down nine rebounds a game. For her career she is averaging eight boards a game. A first-team Quad A All-Section pick last season as a junior, Hartman has averaged 8.5 points a game on 46 percent shooting from the floor, pocketed four steals a contest and hit 75 percent of her free throw attempts.
"Logan is such a passionate player," said Watts. "She has good speed, and while her first love is defense, she has the ability to slash from the high post which will add a nice dimension to our front court next season."
Johnsen comes to Davidson from Wayne, Pa, where she attends Conestoga high school. A two-time co-captain for her team, Johnsen averaged 12 points and eight rebounds, while making herself known on defense with two blocks and two steals a game as a junior prepster. Those numbers helped her earn a nod on the All-Central league and All-Main Line First Teams last year. Johnsen's freshman and sophomore seasons saw her earn second-team All-Central league honors.
"Described as a smooth and focused athlete, Kristen can be a deadly threat both inside and out," said Watts. "Her knack for rebounding was a strong recruiting factor, and I see her having an immediate impact on our team come next year."
A 6-1 guard/forward from Hollidaysburg, Pa., Ottaway has had a fine three-year prep career that has seen her already top the 1,000-point mark for her career. As a junior last season, Ottaway averaged a double-double, dropping in 19 points a game while hauling in 10.4 rebounds per contest. An Altoona Mirror First Team member both her sophomore and junior prep seasons, Ottaway helped lead Hollidaysburg to the PIAA District VI championships in the 2005-06 season. Ottaway is also a two-time first-team All-Mountain Athletic Conference member.
"We love Amanda's aggressive style," said Watts. "She goes hard on both ends of the floor. Add that hustle to her versatility, and we believe we have a potential blue-chipper student-athlete that will help us to continue to put Davidson on the map nationally."
Davidson next plays cross-county rival Charlotte on the road, Saturday, Nov. 24, at Halton Arena. Gametime is set for 2 p.m.
