DAVIDSON, N.C. — Behind strong performances from an outstanding freshmen class, the Davidson Wildcat women's swimming and diving team is ranked ninth in the latest Division I mid-major poll by collegeswimming.com. On the men's side, upperclassmen are carrying the load, leading the men to a ranking of 22nd.
Just halfway through the 2007-08 season, the incoming class has already scattered their name throughout the record books and Wildcat Top-10 performers lists.
“Though its early in our season, to see our progress as a program relative to our peer institutions is very exciting," head coach John Young said. “I think our women sense the opportunity they have to do something significant for Davidson Swimming and Diving this season. Anything that reinforces our direction is positive, but we've still got a lot of season left.”
Freshman Lindsey Martin has made the biggest splash, setting a pair of school records and swimming leadoff on a pair of record-setting relay records. Martin first broke the school record in the 50 free in her first collegiate meet against East Carolina and has bested her own time several times over while remaining undefeated in the event. Her current record of 23.53 is also tops in the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association. She also holds the school record in the 100 free (52.17) and as a member of the 200 and 800 freestyle relays and ranks second on the Wildcat Top-10 performers list in the 200 free.
Several other members of the 2011 class have made an immediate impact for the Wildcat women. Along with Martin, freshmen Alexa Richardson, Emily Castle, Anna Stringfield, Jessica Delgehausen and Ineke Stegger have combined for 19 additions to the Wildcat Top-10 Performers list.
Stringfield's name appears on five different Top-10 lists. She ranks third in the 200 free (1:53.85), third in both the 200 back (2:05.65) and 200 IM (2:08.12), and fifth in the 1000 free (10:35.20) and the 400 IM (4:31.71).
With four Top-10 additions, Stegger ranks sixth amongst Wildcat Top-10 performers in the 400 IM (4:35.36), eighth in both the 200 breast (2:26.74) and 200 IM (2:11.35), and ninth in the 100 breast (1:08.63).
Delgehausen ranks ninth time in program history in the 200 free (1:56.15) and sixth in both the 500 free (5:07.63) and the 1000 free (10:36.91).
Castle is third in the 100 fly (58.51) and 10th in the 50 free (24.95), while Richardson ranks seventh in the 50 free (24.88).
Richardson, Castle and Delgehausen are also part of the record-breaking 200 freestyle relay team, while Delgehausen and Stringfield also appeared in the record-setting 400 freestyle relay.
Sophomore Caitlin Sheetz, also having a breakout season, was a part of the 400 free relay as well and has moved up the Wildcat Top-10 performers list in a pair of events, now ranking third in the 1000 free and seventh in the 1650 free.
Meanwhile, the men's team is making an impression despite being short staffed.
School record-holders Fiete Stegger, junior Merritt Peele and Scott Frantz all have top league times in their events. Stegger leads the league in the 100 free, while Peele has the league's top time in the 200 and 500 free, and Frantz leads in the 100 back.
Senior Will Broughton also has a league-best in the 1000 free, while sophomore Miller Williams is tops in the 100 fly.
The Wildcat men also have league-best times in the 200 free, 400 free and 200 medley relays.
