
No. 7 'Cats will Face No. 2 ASU in SoCon Tournament Opening Round

CHATTANOOGA, TENN. — Having won six of the last nine matches to finish the regular season, the seventh-seeded Davidson Wildcat volleyball team is set to open the 2007 Southern Conference Tournament against the second-seeded Appalachian State Mountaineers tomorrow at 10 a.m. in opening round action on the campus of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
The teams met under a week ago with the Wildcats (12-19, 7-11) snapping the Mountaineers' (18-13, 14-4) 11-match winning streak with a 3-2 (25-30, 30-21, 30-27, 27-30, 15-12) win in Boone. Appalachian, who hadn't lost a match since October 5, finished the season with a four-game defeat of Georgia Southern to earn the seventh seed. Likewise, the Wildcats used a four-game defeat of the Eagles to secure the seventh seed.
No. 3 Furman (20-8, 13-5) and No. 6 UNC Greensboro (18-14, 11-7) will follow the Davidson-Appalachian match at 4:30 p.m., and top-seeded College of Charleston (22-7, 16-2) will face No. 8 Georgia Southern (10-20, 7-11) at 4:30 p.m. Host No. 4 Chattanooga (18-13, 13-5) will close Friday's opening round with a 7 p.m. match against No. 5 Elon (17-15, 12-7).
The winner of Appalachian/Davidson will advance to Saturday's semifinal matchup at 4:30 p.m. against the winner of the Furman/UNCG match. The championship will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Match Up

Last season, fourth-seeded Davidson dropped a 0-3 decision to the fifth-seeded Chattanooga Mocs in Boone in the second round of the 2006 SoCon Tournament.

The Mountaineers hold a 25-13 edge in the overall series, including a split this season. The 'Cats dropped a 3-1 decision earlier in the season in Belk Arena, but avenged the loss with a 3-2 win in Boone last Friday.
The Last Meeting
Freshman outside hitter Sarabeth Peele tallied a match-high 22 kills to lead the 'Cats to a 3-2 win over Appalachian last week, while three other Davidson players reached double figures. Senior outside hitter Katie Pierucci added 14 kills, while junior middle blocker Kittery Neale had 13 and sophomore outside hitter Tierney Hodge had 10.
Pierucci and Peele each notched double-double performances with 13 and 10 digs, respectively, while senior libero Lindsey Woeste recorded a match-high 31. Freshman setter Hayley Lawson had 58 assists on the 'Cats' 75 kills and also double-doubled with 13 digs. Senior Courtney Cron was the fifth Wildcat in double figures in digs with 11.
Appalachian was led by Brittany Zahn, who tallied 20 kills, and also got 18 from Carla Durham and 16 from Dianna Thomas.
