LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Capping off an outstanding junior campaign, Caroline Sanker finished 24th and earned all-region honors for finishing in the top 25 at the 2007 NCAA Southeast Regionals, held on the campus of the University of Louisiville on Saturday morning, as the Wildcat women finished in 16th place.
Sanker, who finished in second and earned All-SoCon honors to lead the Wildcat women to a runner-up finish at the SoCon championships last weekend, finished in a time of 21:20.90 to become Davidson's first all-region cross country athlete. The historic honor caps off an impressive season in which the junior from Rocky River, Ohio, set a new school 5K record (a time of 17:05.00 at the Tiger Invitational), earned three weekly SoCon honors and was named September SoCon Runner of the Month. Sanker led the team for a second straight season, topping her 2006 finish of 32nd place and time of 21:36.80.
"I am extremely proud of Caroline," head coach Jen Straub said. "This is a great job by a junior, becoming the first all-region cross country athlete in the program's history! She ran a great race to close out a great season!"
Junior Megal Atias finished in 80th place with a time of 22.15.65 in the 6K race, followed by senior Annie O'Donnell, who placed 97th in a time of 22:31.60. In her best season as a Wildcat, O'Donnell improved on her finish of 112th and time of 23:07.65 from a year ago.
Freshman Danielle Ruggieri placed in 109th in a time of 22:47.80, and fellow classmate Lauren Childs rounded out the scoring for the Wildcats with a 126th place in a time of 22:58.85.
The Wildcat women finished ninth at last season's regionals, the program's first top-10 finish.
North Carolina State took the team title behind four top-20 finishes for 106 points, as the Wolfpack cross country teams completed the sweep of the regional. Duke placed all five runners in the top-35 for 114 points to earn the second and final automatic team bid to the 2007 NCAA Cross Country Championship, set for Nov. 19 in Terre Haute, Ind.
