DAVIDSON, N.C. -- After a month away from the friendly confines of Alumni Stadium, Matt Spear and his Davidson Wildcats will play seven of their last 10 matches at 1992 Team Field beginning with a 7 p.m. contest against South Carolina Wednesday evening.
“It's been an interesting time for our recent road games,” commented Spear, who is in his seven season at the helm of his alma mater. “A learning process we trust. Certainly we should have played some better soccer. But playing at home again should re-energize the team with a needed dosage of pride.”
Davidson concluded its six-game trip away from home with a 2-0 setback in its SoCon opener Sunday evening to fall to 1-7-0 on the 2007 campaign.
“Hosting a program with the rich tradition of South Carolina is always a treat. As in the past, this USC team is talented, athletic, and well organized. They are off to a good start and have been nationally ranked on most weeks.”
Ranked fourth in the most recent NSCAA/adidas South Region Rankings, South Carolina enters 6-3-0 following a 1-0 blanking of UAB this past weekend.
Offensively, the Gamecocks are led by Sam Arthur, who has recorded five goals and two assists for a team-leading 12 total points.
“Our guys need to focus on our game, namely delivering on a promised 90 minutes of quality soccer. Each match to date we have had good and bad phases. With our schedule, good teams bury you if you have lapses in focus, energy, or execution.”
