CULLOWHEE, N.C. -- Led by a runner-up finish from junior Caroline Sanker, the Wildcat women placed three runners in the top 10 as they raced to a runner-up finish at the 2007 Southern Conference Championships on Saturday morning on the campus of Western Carolina in Cullowhee, N.C.
Sanker finished second in 17:37.28 and was just outraced by Chattanooga's Kathleen Turchin, who finished in 17:30.35 to lead the Mocs to the championship.
Along with Sanker, senior Brenna Burns and Megal Atias finished in the top 10 and earned All-Southern Conference honors. Burns finished fifth overall with a time of 18:09.66, while Atias was seventh in a time of 18:20.31. Fellow classmate Annie O'Donnell narrowly missed the top 10, finishing in 13th overall in a time of 18:36.99.
"I was really pleased with the way that we ran today," head coach Jen Straub said. "We knew it would be a three team race going into today, and I thought our team performed extremely well! To have three runners earn All-SoCon honors and take home the Southern Conference runner-up trophy is a wonderful accomplishment, and I am extremely proud of this team!"
Chattanooga amassed 44 points to 53 for the Wildcats to win the championship. Both teams placed three runners in the top 10 for All-SoCon honors. Along with Turchin, Katie Williams (sixth, 18:19.88) and Shelley Taylor (10th, 18:26.63) finished in the top 10 for Chattanooga.
In the end, the race came down to the wire, as the Wildcats led the Mocs through four runners. Chattanooga runners placed first, sixth, tenth, 11th and 40th, while the Wildcats went 2nd, 5th, 7th, 13th and 26th in the scoring.
Freshman Lauren Childs was the final Wildcat to figure into the scoring, finishing in 26th place with a time of 19:03.02 in her SoCon debut.
"We ran a great race today!" Straub said. "I am proud of the way the girls battled and put us in a position to win. In the end, we came away with the SoCon runner-up trophy, but we still got to bring hardware home!"
