DAVIDSON, N.C. — With three of the top five runners in the conference, the Wildcat women's cross country squad will travel to Western Carolina for the 2007 Southern Conference Cross Country Championships on Sat., Oct. 27, held at the Catamount Athletic Complex in Cullowhee, N.C.
September SoCon Runner of the Month, junior Caroline Sanker is the top rated runner in the SoCon, while seniors Brenna Burns and Annie O'Donnell are ranked second and fifth, respectively.
Sanker ran the league's best time and earned All-Invitational honors for an 11th-place showing at the Auburn Invitational. With a time of 17:12, Sanker bested her own Davidson 5K record and led the squad to a third-place team finish, behind just Florida and Iowa and ahead of the host Tigers.
Burns ran the conference's second-best time, finishing in 17:20, to help the Wildcat women claim the Asics/Winthrop Invitational title for a second consecutive year.
Having the best year of her Davidson career, O'Donnell is ranked fifth in the SoCon behind a time of 18:02.48 from the Tiger Invitational.
Freshman Lauren Childs is also ranked in the top 20 with a time of 18:43.86 at the Tiger Invitational.
The Wildcat women finished third in 2006, behind Chattanooga and Appalachian State. Burns was the team's top finisher with a third-place time of 17:39.33. Junior Megal Atias, ranked 10th in the league, turned in the team's second-best time of 17:50.22 and finished seventh overall. Sanker's time of 18:02.18 was good for 10th place overall, and all three runners earned All-SoCon honors for finishing in the top 10.
Chattanooga bested the Mountaineers by just a point in 2006 and will likely be the Wildcats' fiercest challenger this season. 2006 SoCon Runner of the Year Lannie Marchant is gone, but the Mocs have a pair of runners ranked in the top five in senior Kathleen Turchin and sophomore Shelley Taylor. Turchin's top time of the season came at the Louisville Great Classic, where she finished in 17:34.76, while Taylor ran a 17:58.25 at the Paul Turner Classic.
