Coming off a midweek win at Wofford, the Davidson Wildcat volleyball team will ride that momentum into the weekend, as they host the Western Carolina Catamounts and Chattanooga Mocs at Belk Arena.
The Matchup
Davidson (7-16, 2-8 SoCon) hosts the Catamounts (7-18, 2-8 SoCon) on Saturday at 4 p.m. After a visit to Appalachian, the Mocs (13-9, 8-1 SoCon) visit Belk Arena on Sunday at 2 p.m.
The All-Time Series
Entering the 2007 season, Davidson's all-time series with both Western and Chattanooga were tied, at 17-17 and 16-16, respectively. But both teams earned wins as the 'Cats went on the road earlier this season, with Western taking a 3-0 (30-16, 30-18, 30-24) win on Sept. 22, and Chattanooga, a 3-0 (30-27, 30-21, 30-25) win the following day.
Scouting the Catamounts
The Catamounts are coming off a pair of SoCon losses this past weekend, as Elon (3-2) and Greensboro (3-0) earned wins in Reid Gym, and enter the match on a six-match losing streak. WCU's last win came on Sept. 26., a 3-1 triumph over East Tennessee in Cullowhee.
Western is 10th in the SoCon entering the weekend, but the Catamounts have a pair of hitters with over 200 kills in Meredith Harmon and Ali Rook, while Katie Hennessey ranks 7th in the SoCon in hitting percentage with a .329 clip. Latonia Cunningham ranks third in the league with 1.32 blocks/game, and Liz Rondone is third with 5.49 digs/game.
After getting swept at SMU's tournament, Western returned the favor at UNC Asheville, downing the host Bulldogs (3-0), USC Upstate (3-0) and Kennesaw State (3-1) to open the season, but have struggled since. They dropped three matches against stiff competition at Georgia Tech's tournament, falling 3-0 each the host Yellow Jackets, Georgia and Kentucky, and lost matches at Arizona (3-0) and versus Gardner-Webb (3-1). WCU's only other SoCon win came against the Citadel (3-1) at the Catamount Clash VI, and they also defeated N.C. A&T (3-0).
Souting the Mocs
Entering the weekend, Chattanooga is second in the SoCon standings, behind just CofC (9-1). Leslee Ball ranks among conference leaders in hitting percentage (9th, .311) and kills (3rd, 4.89/g), while reigning SoCon Player of the Week Lara Newberry anchors a strong Chattanooga defense.
In the Mocs 3-2 loss to Lipscomb on Tuesday, Newberry made 35 digs to set a new school dig record with a career total of 2,087. Leading the conference in digs with 7.40/game, she was selected National Player of the Week by College Volleyball Update (CVU.com).
Before their non-conference loss to Lipscomb, the Mocs were riding a four-match winning streak over SoCon opponents. Chattanooga's lone conference loss came on Oct. 6 at Furman, as the Paladins took a 3-2 (30-21, 22-30, 30-32, 30-19, 16-14) decision in Greenville, S.C.
